So the
other day I was out on an errand, while waiting to be attended to, I got into a
conversation with the other people there. I asked; What Nigeria’s Greatest Challenge Is?
The
answers included, power, industrialization, oil and gas, agriculture etc. But
one answer stood out the most. An elderly man present there said “Nigeria’s
Greatest Challenge Is TRUST”. I
thought for awhile and then agreed with his answer ‘that our greatest challenge
is truly TRUST’.
You may
wonder how trust is a challenge, so here, lemme make you understand, but first,
let us understand what is meant by TRUST.
According
to Wikipedia; In a social context, trust has several connotations.
Definitions of trust typically refer to a situation characterized by
the following aspects: One party (trustor) is willing to rely on the actions of
another party (trustee); the situation is directed to the future.
In addition,
the trustor (voluntarily or forcedly) abandons control over the actions
performed by the trustee. As a consequence, the trustor is uncertain about the
outcome of the other's actions; they can only develop and evaluate
expectations. The uncertainty involves the risk of failure or harm to the
trustor if the trustee will not behave as desired.
Trust can also be attributed to
relationships between people. It can be demonstrated that humans have a natural
disposition to trust and to judge trustworthiness that can be traced to the
neurobiological structure and activity of a human brain. Some studies indicate
that trust can be altered e.g. by the application of oxytocin.
But this is not what we are interesting in here. Lol.
Conceptually, trust is also
attributable to relationships within and between social groups (history,
families, friends, communities, organizations, companies, nations, etc.).
In the social sciences, the subtleties of trust are a subject of ongoing research. In sociology
and psychology
the degree to which one party trusts
another is a measure of belief in the honesty, fairness, or benevolence
of another party. The term "confidence"
is more appropriate for a belief in the competence of the other
party. Based on the most recent research, a failure in trust may be forgiven more easily if it is interpreted as a failure of
competence rather than a lack of benevolence or honesty.
From the
above definitions we can simply define Trust
as a belief that someone or something is reliable,
good, honest, effective, etc.
Obviously this is the greatest challenge we Nigerian’s are facing. We don’t trust friends and family, we don’t even
trust ourselves, and how then can we
trust our leaders?
But it’s not our fault. Our leaders keep letting us down, hereby constantly breaking
our trust.
They make us lose the belief and faith we have in them. They are not
reliable, good, honest and effective. Why
then should we trust them?
·
I cannot trust a man who acts in his favor
instead of the favor of the people.
·
How can we trust leaders who value their pockets
more than the welfare of their people?
·
Why should we trust leaders who are hypocrites?
·
Leaders who take all, want more and gives
nothing back?
If we had faith and trust in our leaders then Nigeria will be a better
place.
But am sorry to say, the leaders we have had so far are big hypocrites and
untrustworthy.
- How do we advance when we don't trust ourselves?
- How can bills be passed, when our leaders are not trustworthy?
- How can we have good infrastructures, when politicians handle these contracts, and we don't trust them?
- How then can we advance when our leaders make us doubt their every move?
We Lack Trust In Our Leaders... Because they are not TRUSTWORTHY and COMPETENT...
THAT’S OUR GREATEST CHALLENGE.
The Real Nigeria!!!
